7 reasons to love watercolors

Unsure about diving into watercolor? Here are 7 reasons why it might be the perfect choice for you.

ChatGPT give me 7 reasons to love watercolors… just joking. These are my personal reasons I love watercolors.

#1 Portable

You can take watercolors anywhere you are inspired to paint. They are so easy to pack and go. I’ve painted in coffee shops and outdoors.

#2 Simple to clean

You’ll love how easy watercolor is to clean up. When you’re done with a painting session, rinse out your cup of water, close your watercolor palette, swish your brush around in clean water and you’re done!

#3 Safer than other paints

You’ll love how safe watercolor is compared to other mediums. I was getting headaches and coughing while painting with my oils. I love how oil paintings look, but I didn’t like feeling sick and exposing my family to the fumes. Since, switching to watercolors, I haven’t had the previous health issues. Also, I feel good about my kids using watercolor, because water is all that’s needed to clean the brushes, not cleaners with danger warnings.

#4 They aren’t boring

Watercolors can be so unpredictable that it’s exciting to see how colors will mix, dry, blend, and react to each other. Perfectionists like myself, will either give up, or learn to let go and enjoy the ride.

#5 A rewarding challenge

An art teacher told me, “Avoid watercolor! It's frustrating and you can't control it.” So I did. I had no desire to learn watercolor, until I met an artist who said, “If you can Master watercolor you can Master anything.” If watercolor can improve my skills as an artist across many mediums, then challenge accepted!

The idea, “If you can Master watercolor, you can Master anything,” told me watercolor would be challenging. So when my paintings didn't turn out the way I wanted, I wasn't surprised. I learned from them and kept pushing. In the process of learning how watercolor works, I learned to love it.

It’s now my privilege to say to you, “If you can master watercolor, you can master anything!”

#6 Create realistic effects

Some watercolor techniques can create amazing realistic effects. Some techniques almost make the painting for you. I share those techniques on my YouTube channel.

#7 Affordable

Considering how expensive Golf and some hobbies are like plastic crack…I mean LEGO bricks, watercolor is very affordable. You can create beautiful artwork for yourself, to sell, or to give as special gifts.
